A 10-year-old rape victim has given birth at a hospital in India after an abortion plea was turned down by the Supreme Court.
The baby was delivered this morning via C-section on a maternity ward, a senior doctor said.
The girl was reportedly unaware she had delivered a child because her parents told her she was undergoing an operation to remove a stone in her stomach.
The 10-year-old was repeatedly raped for several months, allegedly by her uncle, who is in custody awaiting trial.
The horrific crime came to light when the victim was taken to hospital with complaints of stomach ache.
She was found to be 30 weeks pregnant.
On July 28, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea to terminate the 32-week pregnancy.
It was decided that an abortion was neither good for the girl or the foetus.
Courts only allow medical termination of pregnancy up to 20 weeks under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.
Exceptions can be made if the foetus is genetically abnormal or if the mother’s life is in danger.
Dr Dasari Harish said: “The girl delivered a baby through C-section this morning.
“The infant’s weight is 2.2 kg and it has been admitted to neo natal ICU.
“As far as the girl is concerned, she is stable and will be kept in a separate room.”
The girl’s father has told the hospital the newborn should be put up for adoption, local media reports.
