French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife has spoken for the first time about being married to man 25 years her junior.
In a brutally honest interview, Brigitte Macron, 64, discussed the age gap between her and her boyish husband, who is 39.
Much has been made about the age gap between the retired teacher and her former pupil, with the couple being forced to defend their relationship.
In the interview, Mrs Macron admitted that she is reminded of the 25 years between them every morning when she looks at her husband.
She said: “The only problem is that he’s younger than me.”
She added: “Of course, we have breakfast, me with my wrinkles, him with freshness, but that’s how it is.”
Mrs Macron also spoke out after public pressure forced the couple to abandon their plans to give her the official title of first lady – claiming she was not too bothered.
She said: “I don’t feel like a first lady. That’s the translation of an American expression, and I don’t like anything about it.”
MOMENT 15-YEAR-OLD EMMANUEL MACRON KISSES THE TEACHER, 40, WHO WOULD BECOME HIS WIFE
Mr Macron had wanted his wife of a decade to be given more formal recognition as she carried out her day-to-day work.
But more than 300,000 people signed an online petition “against the status of First Lady for Brigitte Macron”.
Despite the embarrassment over the title, Mrs Macron said she had no regrets about moving into the Elysee Palace in Paris.
She said she would now post a job description online, highlighting her charity work and other engagements, which she will do for free.
She said: “Like all of those before me, I will take on my public role, but the French people will know the resources at my disposal,’ she told Elle magazine.
“We’ll post my meetings and my commitments on the presidential website so that the French people know exactly what I’m doing. What’s important is that it’s clear.”
Mrs Macron, a retired teacher, first met the teenage Emmanuel when he was in her drama class in their home town of Amiens, northern France.
The couple ended up pursuing a passionate affair, before the mother-of-three left her first husband.
Mrs Marcon is now known for the vigorous exercise routines and healthy eating that have helped her maintain her remarkably youthful figure.
She said: ‘When I read about us, I always get the impression that I’m reading someone else’s story. Our story is so simple.
“If I hadn’t chosen this, I would have missed out on my life. The only problem with Emmanuel is that he’s younger than me.”
The couple, who have no children together, are currently on holiday in Marseille, in the south of France.
