One widely practised portion of marriage rites in our part of the world is the infamous ‘list’, which a bride’s family gives to the groom’s family to procure before the engagement and wedding can go forward.
Sometimes it is a reasonable list and sometimes it is not, but it definitely would be veering off into the absurd with the story told by one Ghanaian nurse whose father nearly derailed her marriage.
The father presented a ‘controversial’ list to the groom’s family to buy, which included items such as a 48 inch flatscreen tv, a taxi, a plot of land and 15 pieces of kente cloth.
This naturally annoyed the groom, but the father refused to budge and in the end the two had to break up because of the man’s stubbornness.
After four years of no guy coming near her, she found another man willing to marry her and her father came up with the same absurd list.
