Three people, including a headmaster have been arrested by police in Kumasi for their involvement in examination malpractice on Thursday, April 7.
Headmaster of Ascension School Complex, a private school at Sewua near Kumasi, Ekow Quashie, a female teacher and a WASSCE candidate were arrested for possessing examination materials of the ongoing West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examinations.
Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah, who reported the incident on Adom Fm’s Midday News, said they were caught when the English paper was still ongoing.
According to Ohemeng a female teacher, who is the English literature tutor, and a candidate who are both from the same school were arrested for trying to sneak foreign materials containing solved questions to other candidates.
The teacher was alleged to have conspired with the head master and supplied a student of the school the leaked papers.
A policeman helping with invigilating of the students at the Opoku Ware Girls School’s hall suspected the student in question and pulled her aside for a search, leading to the discovery of the papers.
The student named the female teacher as the one who gave her the answers to be given to the students in the examination hall.
“The behavior of the student prompted the police to arrest him because he was said to be behaving funny” Ohemeng said.
The headmaster also had some of the leaked exams questions and answers on his mobile phone, leading to his arrest. The phone has been seized by the police.
The suspects have been granted bail and ordered to report later to the police for further investigations.
Controller of the Kumasi Zone of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Alex Boapem Bosompem, who spoke with Ohemeng Tawiah, said incidents of malpractices and leakages have taken a toll on staff of the council.
Mr. Boapem Bosompem said WAEC and the police in Ashanti region are also after the syndicate who provided exam papers to school authorities of Ascension Senior High School.
