A woman has been shot while holding a baby as gunmen fired through the window of a home during a terrifying incident that left two other people dead.
According to local reports the woman was the innocent relative of the intended target, with the attackers coming into a Dublin back garden at around 4pm today and opening fire at the kitchen window.
A woman in her 40s and a man in his 30s were killed in the shooting, while the woman with the baby is in a serious condition.
The condition of the baby, and two other people caught up in the tragedy, are currently unknown, Dublin Live reports.
The deceased man was shot through neck, heart and hand, Dublin Live reported.
Local woman Carmel Byrne was first on the scene at Balbutcher Drive and said: “I was in the house and I heard shots.
“We could hear babies screaming, so I went out and saw a chap lying there. I tried my best to bring him back.
“I tried to keep the pressure on him while I was on the phone. I was pushing on his chest for a good while.”
She added that she used her experience working as a cleaner in the X-ray department in a Dublin hospital to give one of the men CPR.
Local Dublin City councillor Noeleen Reilly said that those in the area were in complete shock following the shooting.
She said: “It’s just awful, especially for someone to shoot through someone’s window so indiscriminately like that.
“This area of Ballymun wouldn’t be used to any trouble like that. Everyone is absolutely devastated.
“Any area is going to have anti-social behaviour, but certainly not anything like this. Innocent people getting caught up in trouble like this just isn’t fair.”
Councillor Reilly added that while the incident was unexpected, it was the culmination of a number of recent incidents in the area.
She said: “Unfortunately there has been a few shootings in different parts of Ballymun in the last couple of months, and there’s been a fear that if they weren’t nipped in the bud that they’d escalate.
“It’s really not known whether this particular shooting is related to those ones just yet, and the names here aren’t connected to any of those previous shootings.
“But at the end of the day this is an incident where people have lost their lives and we absolutely need more Gardai and resources in the area.”
A police spokesman said: “Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of a shooting incident at Balbutcher Drive in Ballymun, Dublin 11.
“The incident was reported to Gardaí shortly before 4pm on August 16th 2017.
“On arrival at the scene Gardaí discovered a woman and a man suffering from apparent serious gunshot wounds.
“A silver Opel Zafira with 08 LS plates was found partially burnt out a short distance from the scene.
“The area is sealed off pending the arrival of Garda Scenes of Crime Examiners.
“Anyone who was in the Balbutcher Drive area this afternoon between 3pm and 4pm is asked to contact Ballymun Garda Station on 01 666 4400.”
